Opening Conference

MME / BirdLife Hungary in partnership with the Romanian Transylvanian Carpathian Society Satu Mare have started a project entitled „Cooperation to establish a cross-border bird monitoring network and on-line database” in the frame of the „Hungary – Romania Cross-Border Co-operation Programme 2007-2013” coofinanced by the European Regional Development Found.

The general objective of the project is to ensure the favourable conservation status of cross-bordernatural assets important bird areas and to support the management of cross-border Natura 2000 sites. To achieve this monitoring the changes of natural status of these areas indicated by sensitively by the bird populations is needed. During the implementation of the Project strictly coordinated monitoring works conducted to survey cross-border bird populations with the involvement of volunteers. To enter and process collected data a tri-lingual on-line database will be developed. With the data provided by the on-line database the volunteers, the stakeholders, the national nature conservation authorities and other interested NGOs will be able to get recent information on the actual state of the natural assets of the project area.

Opening Conference of the event have been organised on 18-19. February 2011. at Nyíregyháza. Civil or-ganizations and national authorities have been represented on the event. The participants had the opportu-nity to get information on the ongoing monitoring works along the project area and to get information about the result of the surveys and the problems encountered in different areas. The planned monitoring protocols have been discussed and the structure of the on-line database developed in the frame of the Project has been presented.

Soon after the opening event the field works will begin. Volunteers along the eight involved counties will regularly visit the designated sampling sites.
